Looking for a ManyChat alternative? On Instagram the features are Meta’s, not the vendor’s. What actually differs is what you are billed for and what happens after the bot runs out of answers.

Every legitimate tool does the same things

Before the comparison, the part that most comparisons skip.

Comment-to-DM, keyword triggers, story-mention replies, the 24-hour window — these are endpoints in Meta’s Instagram Messaging API. Every tool connected through the official Instagram Business Login calls the same ones, under the same limits. A grid of green checkmarks tells you which vendors implemented the API, not which one you should pay.

Nothing on this page can change that, and neither can ManyChat. No tool sends a message to somebody who never contacted you — that access does not exist in the API. We wrote the full rule set out in the rules that govern Instagram DM automation.

So the honest comparison is narrow: what you are billed for, where the conversation goes when the automation stops, and whether the AI answers from your own material or from a prompt. Those three are below.

ManyChat’s numbers above describe their published plans in 2026 and are here for orientation, not as a quote — per-contact pricing moves, and a tier boundary matters more than the rate. Check their current pricing page before you decide. Chatonaut is in early access and does not take payments yet: paid plans are activated on request at no charge while that lasts.

Why the billing unit is the row that matters: on Instagram a «contact» is created the moment somebody becomes addressable — a commenter your rule answered, a person who sent one DM. Not a customer. One Reel with 600 comments creates roughly 600 contacts in the hour it peaks. The arithmetic is in how per-contact billing builds an invoice.

Which of the two is actually yours

Four reasons to stay where you are, and four to move. Both lists are real.

Stay on ManyChat if

Any one of these is true

  • WhatsApp is where your sales close. Chatonaut does not have WhatsApp, and will not pretend otherwise. If real volume is there, moving costs you more than the subscription saves.
  • You run Facebook, TikTok or Messenger alongside Instagram. One panel for several networks is a genuine advantage and we do not have it.
  • You live off the template marketplace. Ready-made flows and the freelancers who assemble them are an ecosystem, not a feature, and it took years to build.
  • Your volume is small and stable. If a strong post never doubles your numbers, per-contact billing never bites, and switching buys you nothing.
Move to Chatonaut if

Any one of these is true

  • Instagram is the whole job. One channel, done properly: comments, Direct and story mentions in one inbox, with the automation history above the conversation.
  • A good post should not be a cost event. The plan covers the account. A Reel that outperforms does not move the invoice, which is the point — you cannot predict which post that will be.
  • You want an AI agent that answers from your own material. Your price list, your policies, your FAQ — and an explicit handover when it should not guess. Included in Premium, $29 a month.
  • The free plan has to run something real. 50 conversations a month and one automation, which is enough to test a funnel on a live post rather than with a colleague.

What each plan includes

Switching

Moving over, without a silent outage

Your followers, your posts and your Direct history belong to Instagram, not to any vendor. What does not transfer is short, and one step has to happen in the right order.

01

Write down what is actually running

Open your current tool and list every live automation, keyword and post with a rule attached. Include the one you forgot about — there is always one.

02

Rebuild before you connect

Draft the flows in Chatonaut with the Instagram account still connected to your old tool. Nothing is live until you connect, so there is no rush and no gap.

03

Replace links that point at your old vendor’s domain

Bio link, link stickers, pinned comments, ad destinations. Vendor short links stop working when the subscription ends — including the ones you sent last year.

04

Connect in a quiet hour

Instagram sends message webhooks to one app at a time. The moment Chatonaut connects, the old tool goes dark — which is fine if you planned it and a two-day outage if you connected on a Friday evening «just to look».

05

Watch the first hundred conversations by hand

Not the dashboard — the actual text. That is where you find the branch nobody rebuilt and the keyword nobody types.

Contact tags and flow trees do not transfer between any two tools in this category — there is no interchange format, and tag semantics are not portable. The step-by-step version, including what happens to Meta’s windows during the switch, is in switching Instagram automation tools.

Questions people actually ask

Is Chatonaut a full replacement for ManyChat?
For Instagram, yes — comment-to-DM, keyword funnels, story-mention replies, a shared inbox and an AI agent. For everything else, no: Chatonaut has one channel and ManyChat has several. If your work lives on WhatsApp, Facebook or TikTok as well, this is not the swap for you, and we would rather say so here than after you have moved.
Will I lose my subscribers if I switch?
No. Your followers and your Direct conversations belong to your Instagram account, not to a vendor. What does not move is what a tool built on top of them: contact tags, custom fields and the flow trees themselves. Recent conversation history can be imported when the account connects, so the inbox is not empty on day one.
Why is there no WhatsApp?
Because one channel done properly beats five done adequately, and adding WhatsApp would mean a second set of rules, a second inbox model and a second thing to keep current. It is a deliberate limit, not a roadmap item we are being coy about.
Is the AI included, or is it extra?
The AI agent is part of Premium — $29 a month with 500 AI replies included. Plus ($15) does not have it. Premium is free for 1 day, once per account. How an agent differs from a keyword bot is in AI agent versus chatbot.
Can I try it without disconnecting what I have now?
You can build the whole thing before connecting — flows, keywords, the welcome message. The connection itself is the point of no return for a while, because Instagram delivers message webhooks to one app at a time. Build first, connect last, in a quiet hour.
Is automating Instagram safe for my account?
Through the official API, yes: Chatonaut connects via Instagram Business Login, never asks for your password, and can only do what Meta granted. What gets accounts restricted is the other kind of tool — the one that logs in as you and drives the app. The boundary is in is Instagram DM automation safe.
